The Forge

The Forge on Town Lane is located on a small bend in the road that used to be known as Blacksmith’s Green. In current times Blacksmiths Hill was so named due to its proximity to the forge. The forge was run by blacksmith George Cannon in the 1920’s.

George William Cannon was born in Ardeley in 1867 and he lived at the forge with his wife Mary (also from Ardeley) and 5 children. Their eldest son James Cannon still lived at the forge (aged 31) and worked for Benington Stonemason James Preston, who moved Church Lychgate when the churchyard was extended in the 1930’s.

George Cannon died 10 Sep. 1929 aged 62. His wife Mary died 8 Feb. 1936 aged 69 and they are buried in Benington Churchyard.
